TRILLIAN + DODI
HYBYCOZO: Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu (2014)
Temporary: November 2016 – January, 2018
Hayes Valley: Patricia's Green, Octavia and Hayes Streets (view map)
Trillian + Dodi are visually stunning light-emitting geometrical sculptures, part of an art installation series by HYBYCOZO: Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu consisting of complex 3D shapes. Trillian is 1,000 pounds and Dodi is 700 pounds, made of 12 to 20 steel panels each with intricate laser-cut patterns lit from within by programmable, sound-responsive LED bulbs. The changing light coming through the steel is mesmerizing and captivating. Hoping to capture some of the wonder and curiosity that sparked their love of geometric patterns, the artists studied everything from ancient Islamic tiles to the patterns created by particle physicists when modeling the unified field theory. HYBYCOZO is the name the artists chose for the project and themselves; it is a contraction of "Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone.” A previous HYBYCOZO installation went on to become one of the most photographed installations in the festival world after follow-up appearances at Treasure Island festival in San Francisco and Further Future outside of Las Vegas.
Best Viewing: The sculptures are best experienced anytime after dusk, but they are beautiful in daylight, too. Patricia’s Green is an urban park parallel to Octavia Street between Fell and Hayes streets that offers a green space, benches, picnic tables, a play area and rotating art exhibits.
